The NSW Rail Museum is in Thirlmere, within easy reach of Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and the South Coast.

By car​
Located in the town of Thirlmere, the NSW Rail Museum is just one hour southwest of Sydney. Driving is the easiest option, with plenty of parking available in front of the museum on Barbour Road.

By public transport
The NSW Rail Museum is approximately five kilometres from Tahmoor Station and nine kilometres from Picton Station, both of which are on the Southern Highlands rail line.
A bus service from Picton station can connect you to the Museum, with a 600 metre walk from the bus stop. Please note, bus services are infrequent and do not operate on Sundays.
A limited taxi service is available from Tahmoor station to the Museum – be sure to call ahead to book. As a guide only, travel to the Museum by public transport from Sydney’s Central Station is approximately two hours.

What are your opening hours?
The NSW Rail Museum is open 7 days a week, 10am-4pm Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm on weekends.
Heritage train rides operate every weekend, during school holidays, and on selected public holidays; however, schedules are subject to change.

How long should I spend at the museum?
With Australia's largest collection of heritage rollingstock, there's plenty to see and do at the NSW Rail Museum. Expect to spend at least two hours exploring the museum.

In addition, our heritage steam train ride will also take you approximately 40 minutes.
How long before my steam train ride should I arrive?
It is recommended to arrive at the museum 30 minutes before your ride departs, as you will need to allow time to check into the museum. From the front entrance, it is a 5-10 minute walk to Thirlmere Station.

If you are already at the museum, we recommend you be at Thirlmere Station 15 minutes prior to your train ride.
Will my steam train ride still run if it rains?
Yes - our trains don't mind the weather, and it's nice and cosy onboard! In addition, Thirlmere Station has plenty of space undercover for waiting, and the vast majority of our museum exhibits are undercover.
Can I bring my pram or wheelchair on the train?
Due to their heritage nature, our steam train rides and some exhibits are unable to accommodate prams and non-folding wheelchairs inside.
However, our friendly staff and volunteers will be able to assist with boarding and alighting your steam train ride, as well as storing your pram or wheelchair at Thirlmere Station.
Is the NSW Rail Museum accessible?
Yes, the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere has accessible toilets, single level access to all areas, ramp access to the Great Train Hall platform and Roundhouse, and​ a hearing aid loop in the theatrette​. There are also designated bay for disabled parking in front of the museum on Barbour Road.

Please note, The NSW Rail Museum occupies a site that is more than 1 kilometre in length from end to end. The walk from reception (Barbour Road entrance) to Thirlmere station where our heritage trains leave, is approximately 5-10 minutes' walk. It is recommended that visitors with limited mobility plan their visit to include rest stops.

Do you accept companion cards?
Yes, companion cardholders are able to purchase a museum-only or museum + train ride ticket free of charge.
Tickets for companion cardholders must be purchased in-person or over the phone, is not applicable for major events such as Day Out With Thomas or Thirlmere Festival of Steam.
Are pets or companion animals allowed?
No, pets and companion animals are not permitted at the NSW Rail Museum. However, registered service animals with a permit are allowed. Please have your service animal's registration ready to show to our customer service team.
How do I choose my seat on the train?
To ensure everyone has an opportunity to join in on the fun, seating is automatically allocated. ​If you have accessibility requirements or sensory issues and need help with your seating, please call us on 1300 11 55 99.

All tickets are for entry to the NSW Rail Museum from 10.00am to 4.00pm on weekdays and 9.00am to 5.00pm on weekends.

'Museum only' includes all activities, except a steam train ride.

Please be sure of your availability before you book as there are NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES offered.

Children under 2 are admitted FREE but must sit on adults lap during train ride.

The NSW Rail Museum reserves the right to change locomotive power without notice, however will endeavour to notify customers of this change should the need arise for operational reasons.
